Gas Engineer IG2

A Gas Safe registered gas engineer is qualified to carry out all work on gas appliances and gas infrastructure in domestic and commercial properties in the IG2 area. This includes boiler installation, service, and repair; gas safety certificate (CP12) inspections for landlords; gas fire installation and servicing; gas cooker and hob connection; gas pipework installation, extension, and rerouting; gas meter moves; and gas leak investigation and repair.

Gas Safe registration is not just a professional credential — it is a legal requirement. The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 make it a criminal offence for any person to carry out gas work on a gas fitting unless they are Gas Safe registered. A homeowner or landlord who knowingly uses an unregistered person for gas work can also face prosecution. In London, this matters because the market includes a large number of plumbers who are not Gas Safe registered and who may attempt to carry out gas work outside their legal authorisation.

Annual gas safety checks are a legal requirement for landlords and are strongly recommended for homeowners. A gas safety certificate (CP12) confirms that all gas appliances and flues in a property have been inspected and found safe. For landlords, the CP12 must be renewed annually, provided to existing tenants within 28 days of the inspection, and given to new tenants before they move in. The fine for non-compliance is up to £6,000 per offence.

When a Gas Safe engineer inspects an appliance and finds it to be Immediately Dangerous (ID), the appliance must be disconnected before the engineer leaves the property. The engineer will provide written notification of the fault and the disconnection. The appliance cannot be brought back into service until it has been repaired or replaced by a Gas Safe engineer. An At Risk (AR) fault is documented and the homeowner or landlord is advised in writing — the appliance may continue in use but must be repaired promptly.

Gas pipework work — including new gas supply, extension, or rerouting — requires a Gas Safe engineer and must be notified to Building Control under the Building Regulations. In the IG2 area, many Victorian and Edwardian properties have original imperial-size iron gas pipework (3/4-inch and 1-inch). Joining modern metric copper or steel pipework to older imperial systems requires correct adaptors and careful pressure testing — experience with London period property infrastructure is important when specifying this type of work.
