London hard water in Tower Hamlets
Why London water is so hard
250 to 400mg/l calcium carbonate
Thames Water supplies most of London from chalk and limestone aquifers in the Thames Valley and from the chalk of the North Downs. Both sources dissolve calcium and magnesium carbonate as the water filters through them. London water is classified as very hard — one of the highest levels in the UK.
What hard water does to your home
Limescale deposits on the heat exchanger inside your boiler reduce efficiency and accelerate wear. Scale builds up inside the hot water cylinder, on taps and shower heads, inside washing machines and dishwashers, and in the kettle. Hard water also reduces soap lather and leaves skin and hair feeling dry.
How ion exchange softening works
A salt-based ion exchange softener passes water through a resin bed that replaces calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions. The result is genuinely soft water throughout the property. The resin bed is regenerated periodically using a brine solution made from softener salt tablets.
Water softener services
What we offer
Compact under-sink softener
Ideal for London flats and terraced houses with limited under-sink space. A compact single-tank salt softener fits beneath the kitchen counter and treats all water at the rising main entry point.
Whole-house salt softener
A standard whole-house ion exchange softener treating all cold water at the point of entry. Prevents limescale build-up in the boiler, radiators, hot water cylinder, taps, showers and appliances throughout the property.
Harvey Water Softeners installation
Harvey Water Softeners are the UK market leader for compact twin-cylinder salt softeners. Prestige Engineers installs and commissions Harvey units including the Harvey Mini and the Harvey Premier.
Kinetico installation
Kinetico non-electric twin-tank softeners regenerate on demand using water flow rather than a timer, making them highly efficient on salt. We supply and fit the full Kinetico range across London.
Dedicated drinking water tap
Softened water has elevated sodium content and most people prefer not to drink it. Prestige Engineers includes a separate unsoftened cold drinking water tap alongside the kitchen tap as standard in every water softener installation.
Annual softener service
Annual softener service includes sanitising the resin bed, checking the brine tank and injector, testing hardness before and after treatment, and setting regeneration parameters. Salt top-up can be included.

Installation in Tower Hamlets
What is involved in the installation
Location assessment
The softener must be located near the rising main and close to a drain for backwash. In most London properties this means under the kitchen sink, in a utility room, or in a garage. We assess available space before recommending the correct unit size.
Rising main connection
The softener is connected to the rising main cold water supply. A bypass valve is fitted so the softener can be isolated for servicing or salt replenishment without interrupting the cold water supply to the property.
Drain connection
The softener requires a drain connection for backwash and regeneration waste water. This is typically connected to the undersink waste or to a nearby standpipe. No venting to outside air is required.
Dedicated drinking water tap
Softened water has elevated sodium. We fit a separate unsoftened cold tap alongside the kitchen cold tap so drinking and cooking water remains unsoftened. This is included in every installation as standard.
Salt loading and commissioning
We load the brine tank with the first supply of salt tablets and commission the unit — setting hardness parameters, regeneration frequency and time, and testing both inlet and outlet water hardness to confirm correct operation.
Salt supply and ongoing service
Salt tablets (typically 25kg bags) need replenishing every 4 to 8 weeks depending on household size and water usage. We can arrange annual service visits and advise on local salt suppliers or delivery subscriptions.
Types compared
Salt softener vs salt-free conditioner vs magnetic
Salt-based ion exchange (recommended)
The only type that genuinely softens water by removing calcium and magnesium ions. Produces soft water throughout the property. Requires salt tablets and periodic regeneration. The standard recommendation for London hard water.
Salt-free conditioner
Does not remove hardness minerals. Instead modifies the crystal structure of calcium so it is less likely to adhere to surfaces. Reduces scale formation but does not produce soft water. No salt required. Less effective than a salt softener in very hard water areas such as London.
Magnetic conditioner
Clips onto the pipe and applies a magnetic field to the water. There is very limited independent scientific evidence that magnetic conditioners reduce limescale in hard water areas. Not recommended as a replacement for a salt softener in a London property with 300mg/l hardness.

Common questions
Water softener installation Tower Hamlets: frequently asked
Is London tap water hard in Tower Hamlets?
Yes. Thames Water, which supplies Tower Hamlets, delivers water with a hardness of 250 to 400mg/l as calcium carbonate — classified as very hard and among the highest in the UK. This causes significant limescale build-up in boilers, hot water cylinders, taps, showers, washing machines and dishwashers across all Tower Hamlets areas including Bethnal Green, Bow, Poplar.
How does a water softener help my boiler in Tower Hamlets?
Limescale on the heat exchanger inside a combi or system boiler insulates the metal from the water it is supposed to heat, forcing the boiler to work harder and increasing gas consumption. In very hard water areas such as Tower Hamlets, limescale can reduce boiler efficiency by 10 to 15 percent and significantly shorten the boiler lifespan. A salt softener removes the calcium and magnesium that form limescale, protecting the boiler and extending its service life.
Where is the water softener installed in a Tower Hamlets property?
The softener needs to be located near the rising main cold water supply and within reach of a drain for backwash. In most Tower Hamlets properties this means under the kitchen sink in a compact unit, or in a utility room or garage for a larger whole-house unit. We carry out an assessment before recommending the correct unit for the space available.
How much does a water softener cost in Tower Hamlets?
Water softener supply and installation in Tower Hamlets starts from £800 for a compact under-sink unit. A mid-range whole-house system costs £1,000 to £1,500 installed. Premium twin-tank systems such as Harvey Water Softeners and Kinetico units cost £1,500 to £2,500 installed. All prices include the dedicated unsoftened drinking water tap. Salt and annual service are extra.
