Replaces your existing programmer

A smart thermostat replaces the standard programmer or room thermostat on your wall. It connects to your home Wi-Fi and is controlled via a smartphone app. Schedules are set in the app rather than on the device itself, and you can adjust them from anywhere.

Learns and adapts automatically

The Nest Learning Thermostat observes your adjustments over the first week and builds a schedule automatically. The tado system uses geofencing — it detects when all household members have left home and reduces the heating without manual input. Both approaches reduce heating bills by only heating when needed.

Remote control and voice control

All major smart thermostats work with Google Home, Amazon Alexa, or Apple HomeKit depending on brand. If you are away from home and the weather turns cold or warm, you adjust the heating from your phone without waiting for the system to run its fixed schedule. Full remote control is included in every installation.

2-wire vs C-wire installations

Most smart thermostats work with standard UK 2-wire wiring (live and switched live). Some models require a common wire (C-wire) to power the thermostat continuously — Nest and some tado models fall into this category. Hive uses a wireless receiver at the boiler, which avoids the wiring complexity entirely and is suitable for most UK homes without any rewiring.

Combi, system, and regular boilers

Combi boilers, system boilers, and heat pumps each have different wiring requirements. All three boiler types are supported by Hive, Nest, and tado, but the wiring connections at the boiler differ. Always check boiler compatibility before purchasing a smart thermostat. We carry out a compatibility check before ordering any parts.

Heat pump compatibility

Smart thermostats designed for gas boilers may not be compatible with heat pump controllers. Heat pumps typically operate at lower flow temperatures and use OpenTherm or proprietary protocols for communication. Always confirm compatibility with the manufacturer or a qualified heating engineer before purchasing a smart thermostat for a heat pump installation.

Multi-zone systems

Standard smart thermostats control the whole heating system as a single zone. For per-room control, a multi-zone system such as Drayton Wiser or Honeywell Evohome is required. These systems add individual Wiser TRVs or zone valves to each room, allowing each room to have its own temperature schedule independently of the rest of the property.
