Cadent Gas in London: What They Cover and What Your Engineer Covers

Cadent Gas operates and maintains the gas distribution network across most of London, delivering gas from the national transmission system to homes and businesses. Understanding the distinction between Cadent responsibilities and those of a Gas Safe registered engineer prevents confusion when gas problems arise and ensures the correct party is contacted for each type of issue.

Who Is Cadent Gas and What Do They Operate in London?

Cadent Gas is the gas distribution network operator responsible for the gas mains and service pipes across the majority of London. Cadent operates the network of underground pipes that carry natural gas from the national high-pressure transmission system, operated by National Gas Transmission, down through a series of pressure reduction stages to the medium and low pressure mains in London streets. From these street mains, individual service pipes branch off to serve each property, terminating at the gas meter. Cadent is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and replacing all pipework up to and including the meter, but not for the pipework beyond the meter inside the property.

Cadent Gas serves four network areas across Great Britain, one of which covers London and the South East, known as the East of England and North London network. In South London, there are areas served by SGN (formerly Southern Gas Networks), so the correct network operator for a specific London address can be confirmed by checking the Cadent or SGN websites using the property postcode. For most of Central and North London, Cadent is the network operator. For South London and parts of South West London, SGN may be the relevant network operator.

What Cadent Gas Is Responsible For

Cadent Gas is responsible for the gas street mains, the service pipes connecting the mains to individual properties, and the gas meter installation at the property boundary. If there is a gas escape from a street main or service pipe, or if a London householder smells gas and the source cannot be identified as being within the property, Cadent Gas should be contacted via the National Gas Emergency Service number, which is 0800 111 999. Cadent Gas engineers will attend gas emergencies on a 24-hour basis and are responsible for making safe any escape or suspected escape from the network pipework up to and including the meter.

Cadent also handles new gas connections for properties that are not currently connected to the gas network, meter installations and replacements, disconnections of gas supply at the service pipe for demolition or permanent disconnection purposes, and alterations to the service pipe where required for building works. All of these activities require an application to Cadent Gas in advance and will be carried out by Cadent engineers or their approved contractors, not by private Gas Safe registered engineers.

What a Gas Safe Registered Engineer Is Responsible For

A Gas Safe registered engineer employed by a company such as Prestige Engineers is responsible for all gas installation and appliance work beyond the meter inside the property. This includes installing, servicing, and repairing gas boilers, gas fires, gas hobs, gas cookers, and gas tumble dryers; installing and modifying gas supply pipework within the property; carrying out annual gas safety checks on behalf of landlords; and diagnosing and rectifying gas faults within the internal installation.

If a London householder smells gas inside the property and the engineer determines that the source is within the internal gas installation rather than the network pipework, the engineer can carry out the repair. If the engineer determines that the escape is from the service pipe or meter, they will advise contacting Cadent Gas rather than attempting to carry out repairs to network infrastructure themselves, as only authorised Cadent Gas engineers and contractors may work on the network side of the meter.

Contacting Cadent Gas for Non-Emergency Queries in London

For non-emergency gas network queries in London, including applications for new connections, meter move requests, and questions about the gas infrastructure near a property, Cadent Gas can be contacted through their website at cadentgas.com or by phone on their non-emergency customer service number. For queries about gas meter readings, billing, and tariff changes, the relevant contact is the energy supplier rather than Cadent Gas, as the supplier manages the commercial relationship while Cadent manages the physical network.
